Devadrita

The night was cool, pleasant and silent, Preeti was strolling in the park with her dog pixy in the leash, her daily routine before hitting the bed. The sky was studded with small diamonds, a gentle breeze was blowing laden with fragrance of flowers.

All of a sudden pixy started to grown and tug at his leash with full might, and before she could stop or control him he darted behind the bushes with her at his heel.

He started to sniff a bundle and growl, before Preeti could react she heard the sound of muffled cry from the bundle and immediately reached for it, after untying the bundle she saw a small baby girl inside it, her cherubic face was dark with anger and crying, Preeti gently picked her up and went home.

Preeti was a designer who worked from home, she used to work for an US firm and earned enough for a luxurious life, she lived in the same building with three of her other siblings, each having their own flats.

Preeti was single, she lost her husband after an year of their marriage, they had loved each other for ten years before marrying. After losing him she never felt the need to look at any other man, instead she dedicated her time and energy in the things she loved, designing, she used to design furniture, statues and other decorative items, fortunately she earned recognition very soon.

Sometimes she used to pine for a child but as she knew that no one will ever be able to take the place of her husband in her mind she used to suppress that pining and dedicate her feelings in her work.

After returning home with the child she gently laid her down on the bed and started to inspect her for any injuries, she found none, and realized that pixy has found her before any one else could. The baby was pretty, chubby and very cute, with very dark complexion but picturesque features, hardly eight or nine month old with a head full of curly hairs.

She immediately rang her brothers and sister in laws, they came, the baby was cleaned up, fed, dressed and the police were informed, they requested Preeti to keep the baby with her till they make some other arrangements, Preeti requested them to leave her with her till they found her parents, they agreed and left.

Preeti started to immediately like her and her heart prayed that her parents were never found, well her prayers were answered. Preeti applied for her adoption and was granted the permission. She named her Devadrita.

She was pampered a lot by Preeti and her siblings but they never hid the truth about her being adopted, because they did not wanted that truth to be used to poison her mind by some one with malicious intentions.

Devadrita turned up in a beautiful and graceful young lady, she pursued her mother’s career and both worked together in her studio.

Devadrita and Preeti decided to hold an exhibition of their work, one of the city’s prominent artistes Pradyut Banerjee visited their exhibition and offered to start a project with them, which they gladly accepted.

Pradyut immediately started the project. Both mother and daughter were charmed by him. Apart from being from a reputed family, he was good looking, polished and talented.

He belonged to a reputed business house, but changed his way to pursue his dream. His share of his family property was enough to take care of his needs, and leave a lot extra, hence he concentrated on his dreames and Devi Saraswati had all her blessings for him so he never looked back.

The appreciation was not one-sided, pradyut was bowled over by Devadrita the moment he saw her for the first time, that was one of the reasons he started the project, to know her better.

The more he saw Devadrita, the more his attraction for her grew. Devadrita seemed like the person he has been looking for all through his life. He knew from the very beginning that she was an abandoned child, but it hardly mattered to him.

Hardly one year has passed after their knowing each other when Pradyut asked for her consent to marry, after getting their consent he approached his parents who bluntly refused.

They clearly told him that they will disown him if he marries an orphan without any idea about her parentage, her religion or caste.

They became adamant so Pradyut left home and married Devadrita. Initial few months passed a little uneasily in financial measures but they both turned the wheel of luck.

With time they were blessed with a baby daughter, one morning Pradyut was reading the newspaper when he saw a small news bulletin saying his parents have lost all their money to an imposter and are literally on the street, their things are getting auctioned, including their home.

He rushed to the home where he grew up, after five years, he has been barred to visit them for these years, his phone calls were disconnected the moment his voice was heard, even indirect ways of gathering their information was shunned by his parents.

When he walked into the drawing room he saw them sitting side by side with a crestfallen expression on their face. He sat down beside them. His mother clinged to him like a small child, sobbing bitterly.

He gently held them in his arms. And asked them if they will have to be there for the auction or they can leave with him now.

They left instantly, when they reached home they saw that the main door was locked, they opened it and entered, Pradyut gave them some thing to eat.

Devadrita was supposed to be back with the child any moment now, Pradyut was a little tensed about their reaction.

Almost an hour passed by but she did not turned up, Pradyut called her up and she disconnected the phone, the bell rang instantly, Devadrita was standing there with their daughter, the child rushed to Pradyut and Devadrita moved forward to touch his parent’s feet for the first time.
She gently admonished Pradyut for not taking her along with him, she said that she went to the house after picking up the child from school, but he has already left with them.
