Debendra was born with a small defect in one of his legs, which due to ignorance of the small town doctor resulted in a lifelong pain. Debendra’s leg was twisted from the calf, as a result he knew that he will never become a father. To increase the pain, his father passed away at a young age, his mother was one of those persons who believed that parents have full right to control their children’s live.

As a result Debendra grew up as a very shy man, and at the approach of youth, whenever he used to try to befriend a lady, his mother used openly tell her all his drawbacks and used to treat the girl with so much suspicion that all the charm used to disappear from that relationship. She had a firm belief that only money seekers will be chasing her little boy, and as a mother she has full right of protecting her son.

Debendra started to teach in a school to forget his pain, he used to shower all his affection on the children and they used to dote on him. One day while he was just going to enter the school a sweet looking woman approached him, she asked him the direction to the Principal’s room, Debendra could feel the sweat breaking on his forehead while he silently guided her, his limp became even more visible. The girl gently stretched out her hand to him to introduce herself after he has reached the door to Principal’s chamber, she was Mira, their new colleague.

As both of them were of very silent and gentle nature their friendship started from the very first encounter and it started to grow deeper with every day. Then the summer vacations started, Debendra was sitting on his balcony when to his extreme horror he saw Mira entering their building. He tried to get to the door but his mother reached there before him, and opened the door. When Mira asked for Debendra she started to observe her with deep suspicion in her eyes.

For the entire length of time Mira was there she came and went on hundreds of pretexts, her curiosity about Mira was unending. Mira was a bit uneasy but she took Debendra’s permission to visit him daily to understand a few chapters. Within a few visits Mira observed Debendra’s mother’s over curiosity about her and made it a point to include her in all their activities.

One day when Mira came Debendra was not home, he was just about to knock the door when he heard his mother speaking about him to Mira, about his physical problem and all the problems related to that, and how she likes Mira, and how she is not like all the girls who has mixed with Debendra. Then to his horror, she asked Mira whether or not she is married, when Mira said no, she asked if she will marry Debendra. Debendra for a second thought that the world is slipping under his feet. But then he heard Mira speaking in a gentle but shy way, only if Debendra asks her.
